Amazon Could Buy Up to $60 Billion of Qualcomm AI Data Centre Technology

Qualcomm and Amazon have announced an expanded, long-term collaboration focused on artificial intelligence data-centre infrastructure, including customised silicon and high-speed connectivity technologies.

The agreement will see Qualcomm and Amazon work together across multiple generations of technology designed for large-scale AI data centres, with a particular focus on AI inference. Qualcomm will also provide optical connectivity technology intended to support the increasing bandwidth requirements of modern data-centre systems.¹

According to Reuters, Amazon could purchase up to $60 billion worth of Qualcomm AI data-centre products under the agreement, depending on how the collaboration develops.²

Qualcomm Expands Its Data Centre Activities

Qualcomm is widely known for processors and connectivity technologies used in smartphones and other consumer devices, but the company has also been increasing its involvement in data-centre computing.

The Amazon collaboration forms part of that broader expansion.

The two companies plan to work on customised silicon as well as optical networking technology capable of supporting high-speed data transfer within AI infrastructure.¹

These technologies are becoming increasingly relevant as AI workloads require large amounts of computing power and rapid communication between processors, memory, storage and networking equipment.

Focus on AI Inference

A key area of the collaboration is AI inference.

Inference refers to the stage where a trained AI model processes new information and produces an output. As AI systems are deployed across more applications and users, the infrastructure required to support inference is becoming a larger part of the overall AI computing market.

Amazon Web Services has already developed its own custom AI chips and continues to invest in infrastructure designed to support artificial intelligence workloads.

Working with Qualcomm adds another technology supplier to that broader infrastructure strategy.

Potential Scale of the Agreement

Reuters reported that Amazon could ultimately purchase up to $60 billion in Qualcomm products, although the final value will depend on the development and adoption of the technologies covered by the agreement.²

As part of the arrangement, Qualcomm has also granted Amazon warrants giving it the right to purchase Qualcomm shares at a specified price.

Qualcomm shares moved higher following the announcement, while the company reiterated its goal of building a larger data-centre business over the coming years.²

The company has previously said it is targeting approximately $15 billion in annual data-centre revenue by 2029

AI Infrastructure Continues to Broaden

The agreement comes as investment in AI infrastructure extends beyond graphics processors alone.

Large-scale AI systems also depend on networking, memory, optical connections, storage and other technologies capable of supporting high volumes of data.

As a result, semiconductor and infrastructure companies are developing products aimed at different parts of the AI data-centre market.

Qualcomm has also expanded its capabilities in this area through acquisitions, including its purchase of Alphawave, a company specialising in high-speed connectivity technology.²

A Broader Shift Across the Semiconductor Industry

The Qualcomm and Amazon agreement reflects the continuing development of a wider AI infrastructure ecosystem.

Cloud providers are investing in custom hardware and seeking different technologies for training and running AI models, while semiconductor companies are expanding into new areas of computing and connectivity.

For Qualcomm, the agreement broadens its involvement in data-centre technology.

For Amazon, it provides another route for developing customised infrastructure for AI workloads.

The collaboration will now depend on the development, deployment and commercial adoption of the technologies created by the two companies.
