Meta is expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure into Canada with plans for a major new data center in Alberta.
The company is developing a 1-gigawatt, AI-optimized facility in Sturgeon County, north of Edmonton. The project is expected to cost around US$9 billion, or approximately C$13 billion, and would become Meta’s first large-scale data center in Canada.
The development comes as major technology companies continue to increase spending on the computing infrastructure required to support artificial intelligence.
Why Alberta?
Large AI data centers require significant amounts of land, power and supporting infrastructure, making location an increasingly important consideration for technology companies.
Alberta offers access to a substantial energy sector, available industrial land and an established electricity network. The Sturgeon County site has also been designated for industrial use, helping make it suitable for a project of this scale.
Meta has said the location provides the combination of infrastructure, energy access, talent and local partnerships it looks for when selecting new data center sites.
Construction is expected to take approximately two to three years, with more than 3,000 workers expected to be involved at the peak of development.
Growing Demand for AI Infrastructure
Meta’s investment comes as the company significantly increases spending on the infrastructure needed to develop and operate AI systems.
The company has been expanding its network of data centers as demand for computing capacity grows across its platforms and AI products.
Meta is not alone. Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet are also investing heavily in data centers and related infrastructure as competition within artificial intelligence continues to increase.
These developments are changing the physical footprint of the technology sector. While AI services are often described as cloud-based, the systems behind them rely on large facilities filled with advanced computing hardware, supported by significant electricity and networking capacity.
Energy Becomes a Key Consideration
Power supply is becoming one of the most important factors in determining where new AI data centers can be built.
Meta has been working with energy companies and Alberta's electricity system operator to prepare for the facility's future requirements.
The scale of the project also reflects a wider challenge facing the data center industry. As computing demand increases, developers must secure sufficient electricity while also considering concerns surrounding emissions, water consumption and the effect large facilities can have on nearby communities.
Meta has said the Alberta project will include investment in surrounding infrastructure and support for local organizations.
A Significant Canadian Technology Investment
For Alberta, the development represents a sizeable addition to the province's technology and infrastructure sector.
The project could help strengthen Canada's position within the growing North American data center market while creating construction employment and longer-term operational roles.
It may also encourage further investment in electricity generation, transmission infrastructure and other services required to support large-scale computing facilities.
Meta's decision to build in Alberta therefore reflects more than the expansion of a single company's data center network. It is another example of how growing demand for artificial intelligence is influencing investment decisions across technology, energy and infrastructure.
As AI systems continue to require greater computing capacity, access to reliable power and suitable development locations is likely to play an increasingly important role in where the next generation of data centers is built.
